Outcomes and Expectations of Advisors

Student learning, process, and delivery outcomes for academic advising

First adopted in spring 2013 and then refreshed in spring 2018 by the Campus Advising Council, the IUPUI advising outcomes represent common, minimum expectations of advising across IUPUI's campus.

The outcomes have been measured every two years since 2015 through the campuswide assessment of advising (CARLI, discussed below). These outcomes form the basis for the New Advisor Academy, used for onboarding new IUPUI advisors; the outcomes also undergird the Academic Advisor Development Program, the peer-review promotional structure for experienced advisors.

CARLI: the Collegiate Advising-Related Learning Inventory

IUPUI's Campus Advising Council regularly administers a campuswide assessment of students' self-reported levels of advising-related learning, the sources of their learning, and their satisfaction with academic advising. CARLI, the Collegiate Advising-Related Learning Inventory, explores student learning along eight scales:

  1. Intellectual and Personal Growth
  2. Engagement
  3. Career Planning
  4. Policies and Procedures
  5. Campus Resources
  6. Goal-Setting
  7. Logic of the Curriculum
  8. Planning Tools and Personnel
